H.G. Wells’ premise has been the source for many screenplays, scripts and a springboard for many fantastical ideas. However, the importance of the Invisible Man is not in its central conceit, it lies within its theme - the effect on mankind of the pursuit of science. Griffin’s paranoia and the murder of his fellow beings to preserve his ideas are reflected, on a smaller scale, in more recent scientific developments. Iping village is a microcosm of humanity and the prying locals, the self important and self appointed judges of Griffin can easily be discerned today. The Invisible Man is far too important to be dismissed as make believe. The question has become not “What happens if?” but “What happens when?” Leaving all such enquiry aside it is a wonderfully gripping tale!

Herbert George Wells (1866 –1946) was an English writer best known for his science fiction novels such as The Time Machine, The War of the Worlds, The Invisible Man, and The Island of Doctor Moreau. He was a prolific writer of both fiction and non-fiction, and produced works in many different genres, including contemporary novels, history, and social commentary. Wells was the fifth and last child of a former domestic gardener a former domestic servant. A defining incident of young Wells' life is said to be an accident he had in 1874 when he was seven years old. He was dropped on a tent peg at the local sports ground and was left bedridden for a time with a broken leg. To pass the time, he started reading and soon became devoted to the other worlds and lives to which books gave him access; they also stimulated his desire to write. Wells' first bestseller was Anticipations, published in 1901. Well’s is now thought of simply as one of the pioneers of science fiction.
